World Press Photo, founded in the Netherlands in 1955, is an independent non-profit organization that champions the power of photojournalism and documentary photography to deepen understanding of the world’s complexities, promote dialogue, and inspire action. Our annual contest and exhibitions reach millions of people in over 80 locations worldwide each year, and millions more see the work online. 
We showcase compelling stories to create space for reflection in times of urgency. Amid a fast-changing media landscape influenced by censorship, misinformation, and threats to press freedom, we promote standards of accuracy, authenticity, and visual excellence, while ensuring diverse perspectives are represented. 

World Press Photo is currently looking for a Communications Intern for a period of seven months, starting in January 2026. 

Communications Team Internship (0,8-1 fte) - 7 months

The Communications team consists of four dedicated professionals working to amplify the organization's mission by developing and implementing strategic communications that engage diverse global audiences with powerful, photo-driven narratives.

As a Communications Intern, you will contribute to promoting the World Press Photo Contest winning stories and supporting the organization’s broader goals of fostering visual literacy, defending press freedom, and championing diverse perspectives in a rapidly evolving media environment.

A key focus of this internship will be supporting the communications strategy for the announcement of the 2026 World Press Photo Contest winners. These winners, who are selected from around the world, are then invited to Amsterdam for a special program. Following the announcement, the annual exhibition season begins with our flagship exhibition at De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. You will have the opportunity to be part of it all.

Under the guidance of your supervisor, you will gain hands-on experience in social media, email marketing, sending press releases, and leading your own assigned projects. You will engage with our global community, collaborate with world-class photographers, and help ensure our communications uphold the highest standards of accuracy and impact.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will be:

  • Writing and posting content for our social media channels 

  • Using Adobe Creative Suite programs, including Photoshop and InDesign, to make creative visual assets 

  • Handling and responding to public inquiries and media requests

  • Writing and updating content for the website

  • Media, social media, and website reporting

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Supporting campaign development

  • Helping to manage our database of photos, videos, and international contacts

  • Participating in research projects to better understand and connect with our audiences

Your profile

  • You should be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s studies, preferably in media, journalism, communications, marketing, and/or social sciences

  • You have a passion for and knowledge of social media

  • You have strong (English) writing skills

  • You have experience using Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, PremierPro (or similar)

  • You have content creation experience: Photography and video creation

  • You are fluent in English, both written and spoken

  • You have a strong attention to detail

  • You are a self-starter who has the ability to multitask

  • You are a team player, creative, and well-organized

  • You have good interpersonal and intercultural communication skills

  • You have an interest in or knowledge of photography, media, and visual journalism

  • You are living in or near Amsterdam


Our offer

We offer a hands-on internship in a dynamic and international working environment, with a wide range of responsibilities and opportunities to grow. The internship will begin at the start of January 2026 and run for approximately seven months, with exact dates open to discussion. The role is for 32 to 40 hours per week, including at least two days a week in our Amsterdam office. We offer a compensation of €500 (net/full-time) per month.
